The facts

Zapier is the industry-standard no-code automation platform connecting 9,000+ apps through automated workflows called Zaps. Founded in 2011 as a fully remote company, Zapier serves individual creators through to Fortune 1000 enterprises that need reliable, rule-based automation between software tools without writing code. Each Zap starts with a trigger event in one app and executes actions in one or more connected apps, with conditional logic via Paths, data formatting, filtering, scheduling, and error handling built in. Zapier publishes two customer-count figures on its own site and they do not agree: the customer-stories page states 3.4 million businesses and the about page states over 2 million. Zapier's 9,000+ app library covers every major business category: CRMs (Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho), sales engagement (Outreach, Salesloft, Apollo.io), email marketing (Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo), project management (Asana, Monday, Notion), communication (Slack, Teams, Gmail), databases (Airtable, Google Sheets), e-commerce (Shopify, WooCommerce), and AI tools (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini). Zapier publishes an official MCP server, labeled beta on its own product page, which lets external AI clients including Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor trigger Zap workflows and act on connected app data in natural language. The vendor states the server is included in an existing Zapier plan and draws on the same task quota rather than being sold separately. Zapier's MCP page reports more than 195,000 MCP servers created and 4.6 million tool calls completed, while its homepage reports 3.39 million MCP tool calls. Notable integration gap: complex data manipulation and iteration logic requires the Code step (JavaScript or Python) or multiple Zaps, where n8n or Make.com handle these natively in a single workflow. Pricing is published in US dollars, and the pricing page carries a currency selector offering twenty currencies. The Platform ladder bundles Zaps, Tables, Forms and Zapier MCP. Free is $0 per month with 100 tasks, Professional is $19.99 per month billed annually or $29.99 month to month, and Team is $69 per month billed annually or $103.50 month to month with 25 users and SAML SSO. Enterprise is on a custom quote. The billing toggle changes price only, with task allowances identical in both states. Agents and Chatbots are separately priced add-ons: Agents Free at 400 activities per month and Agents Pro at $33.33 per month billed annually, and Chatbots Free with 2 chatbots, Chatbots Pro at $13.33 per month billed annually, and Chatbots Advanced at $66.67 per month billed annually. What the entry price does not buy: the Free plan is capped at 100 tasks per month and two-step Zaps, while multi-step Zap workflows, unlimited premium apps, webhooks and live chat support all start at Professional. Live chat begins at the Professional 2,000-task tier rather than at the bottom of that plan. Shared workspaces, folder permissions and SAML SSO require Team, and a technical account manager requires Enterprise. Zapier MCP draws on the same task quota as Zaps, so heavy AI-driven usage competes with Zap runs for one allowance. Zapier is not the right fit for technically sophisticated teams running complex data transformations, iteration logic, or high-volume workflows. For those needs, n8n (self-hosted open source, cloud from EUR 20/mo billed annually) provides full code access and no per-task pricing. Make.com (from $9/mo billed annually) handles complex branching and JSON manipulation that Zapier's linear model cannot replicate without workarounds. For AI-native workflow orchestration beyond Zap chains, Relevance AI (custom pricing) or Lindy (from $49.99/mo) provide more capable agent frameworks. For enterprise teams needing human-in-the-loop approval steps and audit trails, Tines (security-focused) or Workato (custom pricing) are stronger choices. Current state Q3 2026: Zapier Agents are generally available, and agents built into Zap workflows are bundled into the base plans rather than sold separately. Zapier MCP remains labeled beta on its own product page, and the Zapier SDK, Functions and Lead Router are also in beta. Zapier's terms of service state that Derived Data may be used to operate, enhance, improve and develop its products including through model training, and that customers may opt out by submitting an opt-out form, with Company and Enterprise plan subscribers covered automatically. The trust center publishes SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, GDPR and CCPA, with the SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 reports covering 1 June 2025 to 31 May 2026 and published on 3 August 2026. Zapier is hosted on Amazon Web Services in the United States.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Largest app library in the market at 9,000+ integrations: if a tool has an API, Zapier almost certainly connects to it, making it the default automation starting point for non-technical teams.
  • No-code Zap editor means non-technical teams can build automations in minutes without engineering support, and Zapier Copilot (AI assistant) can build Zaps from natural language descriptions.
  • Publishes an official MCP server, labeled beta and included in an existing Zapier plan, so external AI clients including Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor can trigger workflows across the full 9,000+ app catalog in natural language. Zapier reports 195,000+ MCP servers created and 4.6M+ tool calls completed.

Limitations

  • Task-based pricing scales steeply at volume, and high-frequency automations become expensive against operation-based alternatives such as Make.com. Zapier MCP draws on the same task quota, so AI-driven usage competes with Zap runs for one allowance.
  • Linear Zap model struggles with complex branching logic, iteration, and advanced data transformation that Make.com handles natively, often requiring multiple Zaps and workarounds for scenarios n8n solves in a single workflow.
  • No self-hosting option, so all data passes through Zapier infrastructure, which is a blocker for teams with strict data residency requirements who should evaluate n8n self-hosted instead. Zapier's terms permit using Derived Data for model training unless the customer opts out, and automatic opt-out applies only to Company and Enterprise plans.
