ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose AI assistant for chat, search, writing, data analysis, image generation, voice and agentic work. It runs on the web, on iOS and Android, and in desktop apps for Mac and Windows. OpenAI says its products are used by over 1 billion people each week. Plans draw on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 model families: the Free plan offers unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, while Plus and above add GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 reasoning models, and Pro adds GPT-6 Pro. ChatGPT now has three experiences in one app. Chat handles conversational questions, Work, listed as ChatGPT Work, runs longer multi-step tasks that end in documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports or Sites, and the OpenAI Codex coding agent sits alongside them in the desktop app. Agent mode, listed as ChatGPT Agent, completes tasks on websites, and ChatGPT Deep Research produces cited research reports. Projects, scheduled tasks, memory, custom GPTs, voice with video, a built-in browser and extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets are part of the product. Apps connect ChatGPT to tools such as Google Drive, SharePoint, Slack and GitHub, and developer mode lets it connect to external MCP servers. ChatGPT is priced in USD, with local-currency billing in some countries. Free is $0. Go is $8 per month in the US and may include ads. Plus is $20 per month billed monthly. Pro has two tiers, $100 per month for 5x Plus usage and $200 per month for 20x, and OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 tier on September 10, 2026. Business is $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 monthly for a Standard seat, and $100 annually or $125 monthly for a Premium seat with higher Work and Codex limits, starting at 2 users. Enterprise and Edu are priced through sales. Plans are monthly for Go, Plus and Business, and annual for Business and Enterprise, and nonprofits can get up to 75% off Business or Enterprise. Free has limited uploads, image generation, voice, deep research, memory and Codex. Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs start at Plus, and SAML SSO, SCIM, admin roles and data residency are Business or Enterprise features. Content from Free, Go, Plus and Pro can be used to train OpenAI's models unless the user opts out, while OpenAI does not train on Business or Enterprise workspace data. ChatGPT is best for individuals and organizations that want one general-purpose assistant covering chat, research, writing, analysis and agentic work. Teams whose work lives in Google Workspace should consider Gemini, and organizations standardized on Microsoft 365 should consider Microsoft 365 Copilot. Users who mainly want fast answers with citations from a search engine should consider Perplexity AI, and teams in legal practice, sales-call analysis or customer support can look at specialized agents such as Harvey AI, Gong and Intercom Fin. Current state Q3 2026: OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra in early September 2026 and it is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus and in chat on Pro, Business and Enterprise. On September 11, 2026 OpenAI announced plans to retire custom GPTs across ChatGPT plans, with a migration path to plugins, and existing GPTs keep working until the retirement date for each plan. ChatGPT Work launched on July 9, 2026, and new sign-ups to Pro $200 have been paused since September 10, 2026. OpenAI's trust portal lists SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and ISO/IEC 42001, and OpenAI offers GDPR and CCPA data processing terms and HIPAA through a Business Associate Agreement on eligible business plans.
