Gemini is Google's flagship conversational AI assistant and the parent product of a family that includes Gemini Deep Research, Gemini Spark, Gemini CLI, Gemini Notebook and Jules. It runs on the current Gemini model line. Gemini 3.6 Flash was introduced on 21 July 2026 as the upgraded everyday model available to all users. Gemini 3.1 Pro runs on paid tiers, Gemini Omni handles creative and agentic work, and Deep Think is reserved for the top Ultra tier. Capabilities span conversational chat with a 1M token context window on paid tiers and multimodal input and output across text, image, audio and video. The agentic features are Deep Research for autonomous multi-source report generation and Deep Search for agentic browsing. Creative features cover image generation and editing via Nano Banana Pro, video generation via Veo 3.1, and music generation. Gemini Live provides voice, Canvas provides collaborative editing, and Gems provides custom AI experts, alongside native integration across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive. Google Flow provides an AI creative studio with tiered credits. Gemini Spark is a personal AI agent that runs tasks in the background and reached the macOS app on 30 June 2026. Google Antigravity is a separate agentic development platform. Gemini works with the Model Context Protocol on both sides through the Gemini API. Google hosts a public first-party MCP server at gemini-api-docs-mcp.dev, the Gemini Docs MCP, which a coding agent installs with npx add-mcp and which exposes a documentation search function returning live API definitions and integration patterns. In the other direction the Interactions API connects to remote MCP servers, taking a server name and url in the tools configuration, so the model can reach external tools and services. Google pairs the server with Gemini API Skills for coding assistants. Pricing has four consumer tiers, published in full on Google's own subscriptions page. Free with a Google account provides Gemini 3.6 Flash, varying access to 3.1 Pro, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems and image generation. Google AI Plus at $4.99/month adds 2x higher usage access than Free. Google AI Pro at $19.99/month adds 4x higher usage access, 5TB of Google One storage and Google Flow credits. Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99/month for 5x Pro usage limits and 20TB of storage, with a $199.99/month tier providing 20x Pro limits, 30TB and first access to Deep Think and Gemini Spark. Every tier is billed monthly on the product page, and Google One offers an annual billing option that Google states saves up to 31%. For organizations, Google discontinued standalone Gemini Business and Enterprise Workspace add-ons in early 2026. Gemini AI features are now bundled into Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus and Enterprise tiers at no additional charge. Compliance follows that same route. Google's SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 scope documents each name the Gemini app. HIPAA is the exception: it is delivered through Google Workspace under a Business Associate Agreement, so it does not extend to the $4.99 to $199.99 consumer plans. Gemini is not the right choice for organizations standardized on Microsoft 365, where Microsoft 365 Copilot provides deeper native integration. Several premium features are geographically limited: Google states Deep Think and Gemini Spark are available in select countries, and Chrome auto browse is US-only, so international subscribers pay the same rate for a reduced feature set. Q3 2026 state: Gemini 3.6 Flash shipped 21 July 2026 as the everyday model for all users. Google AI Ultra sells as two sub-tiers at $99.99/month for 5x limits and $199.99/month for 20x. Gemini Spark is live rather than announced, having reached the macOS app on 30 June 2026. NotebookLM is now branded Gemini Notebook.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Free tier is the most capable among major AI assistants, providing Gemini 3.6 Flash with Auto routing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, image generation, Canvas and Gems at no cost.
  • Strongest multimodal capabilities in the category with Veo 3.1 video generation, Nano Banana Pro image generation, music generation, Gemini Live voice and Google Flow creative studio for cinematic scene and story creation.
  • Model Context Protocol works in both directions through the Gemini API. Google hosts a first-party Gemini Docs MCP server, and the Interactions API connects out to remote MCP servers for external tools.

Limitations

  • Some premium agentic features are geographically limited. Google states Deep Think and Gemini Spark are available in select countries rather than worldwide, and Chrome auto browse is US-only, so international Ultra subscribers at $99.99 to $199.99/month receive a reduced feature set.
  • Google repackaged Workspace Gemini in early 2026, discontinuing the standalone Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons. AI is now bundled into Workspace plans at higher per-seat prices, creating a more expensive renewal path for existing customers.
  • MCP is an API-surface capability rather than an assistant feature. The first-party Gemini Docs MCP server exposes Gemini API documentation rather than the assistant itself, and remote MCP connection runs through the Interactions API, so buyers wanting MCP inside the consumer chat experience will not find it there.
