Claude for Word

Claude for Word is Anthropic's Word add-in, one of four Office agents alongside Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. It is generally available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Anthropic's documentation carries no beta designation for it. What it does: answer questions about the open document with clickable section citations, edit selected passages while preserving formatting, review counterparty redlines, work through comment threads, and fill templates in the document's own styles. Claude reads the content of the document currently open in Word, including text, comments, tracked changes, footnotes, tables and bookmarks, and it accesses only that document. Connectors and Skills are the extension layer and they are built on the Model Context Protocol. Claude for Word supports connectors for pulling external context into a document and Skills for reusable task recipes, enabled once in Claude settings and behaving the same way across all four Office agents. One trade-off is worth settling before deployment. Anthropic states that connectors and Skills are available when you sign in with a Claude account directly. When you connect through a third-party platform such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway, these capabilities may not be available. Pricing is bundled into the Claude subscription with no separate Claude for Word fee. Pro is $17 per month on an annual subscription or $20 billed monthly, Max 5x is $100 per month, Max 20x is $200 per month, Team is $20 per seat per month, and Enterprise is quoted rather than published. The limitations are the vendor's own and they are pointed at exactly the buyer this add-in attracts. Anthropic does not recommend Claude for Word for final client deliverables or counterparty sends without human review. Nor for litigation filings or audit-critical documents without verification, for replacing legal or financial judgment, or for documents holding privileged data without proper controls. The add-in does not run on Word 2016 or 2019 perpetual or volume licenses, or on Word for iPad or Android. Security is confirmed on trust.anthropic.com and on claude.com/solutions/enterprise, which states "SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, and CCPA compliance" in its own enterprise feature list. Anthropic publishes one gap plainly and it was re-verified word for word for this audit. Claude for Word does not inherit custom data retention settings an organization may have set, and its activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs or the Compliance API. For a legal team that wants every action on a contract traceable, that is the sentence to read twice. Enterprise administrators can connect an OpenTelemetry audit feed and usage analytics to their own tooling, which mitigates the gap without closing it. Anthropic states that on Pro, Max and Team plans observability and audit export are not available at all. Claude for Word is not the right fit for an organization standardizing on Microsoft 365 Copilot as its single AI vendor. Teams whose compliance framework requires Anthropic-side audit coverage should wait for it rather than deploy at scale. Current state Q3 2026: Claude Fable 5 access was restored on July 1, 2026 after export controls were lifted on June 30, and Sonnet 5 launched on June 30. Both are available through Claude for Word. Anthropic's documentation moved from the help center to claude.com/docs/office-agents during 2026, and Claude for Word is documented there as generally available rather than as a beta.
