Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Claude for Excel

Pros

  • Cell-level citations that jump to the referenced cell, so every explanation traces back to a specific cell, formula or tab. That is audit-ready transparency, and it is the feature Anthropic leads with.
  • Connectors pull external context straight into the workbook, and Anthropic names S&P Global, LSEG and Daloopa. Skills apply reusable task recipes automatically, and both are configured once across all four Office agents.
  • Generally available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise with no separate add-in fee, and enterprise deployment can route inference through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Azure AI Foundry.

Limitations

  • Activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs or the Compliance API, and the add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings. An OpenTelemetry feed to your own tooling mitigates this but does not close it, and it is Enterprise-only.
  • Routing through a third-party platform such as Bedrock, Vertex AI, Foundry or an LLM gateway may cost you connectors and Skills entirely. The enterprise routing option and the extension layer are in tension.
  • Data tables and macro or VBA operations are unsupported, and the add-in does not run on Excel 2016 or 2019 perpetual or volume licenses or on Excel for iPad. Anthropic also warns explicitly about prompt injection from untrusted workbooks.

Claude for Word

Pros

  • Reads the whole open document including comments, tracked changes, footnotes, tables and bookmarks, and accesses only that document. For contract review that scope is the point rather than a limitation.
  • Edits passages while preserving formatting, numbering and structure, which matters more in Word than elsewhere because legal and corporate documents depend on those conventions for version control.
  • Shared context across Claude for Excel and PowerPoint completes the analyst workflow, so an Excel analysis becomes a deck and then a report without re-explaining the data at either handoff.

Limitations

  • Activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs or the Compliance API, and the add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings. For a legal team that needs every action on a contract traceable this is the material gap, and an OpenTelemetry feed mitigates it without closing it, on Enterprise only.
  • Anthropic does not recommend it for litigation filings, audit-critical documents or counterparty sends without human review, nor for replacing legal or financial judgment. Those are the vendor's own words about its own product.
  • Routing through a third-party platform such as Bedrock, Vertex AI, Foundry or an LLM gateway may cost you connectors and Skills. Separately, the add-in does not run on Word 2016 or 2019 perpetual or volume licenses, or on Word for iPad or Android.
