Pros & Limitations
Editorial assessmentClaude for Outlook
Pros
- ✓The autonomy boundary is published by the vendor. Claude never sends mail or invites on its own, and every draft lands unsent in the compose pane, which is the guarantee an email tool has to make before anyone will deploy it.
- ✓Thread summaries and mailbox search results carry per-email citations that open the source message, so an answer can be checked against the original email rather than taken on trust.
- ✓Reads .docx and .xlsx attachments inline and shares context with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, so a thread and its attachments can flow into a memo, a model or a deck.
Limitations
- –Still in public beta, and the only one of the four add-ins that is. Anthropic advises against unattended sending or counterparty correspondence without reading the draft first.
- –Compatibility is a hard gate. It requires Exchange Online through Microsoft 365, an admin Graph consent, and does not run on Exchange on-premises, Outlook 2016 or 2019 perpetual editions, iOS or Android.
- –Not included in Enterprise audit logs and does not inherit custom retention settings. Compliance API coverage is in public beta, and on Pro, Max and Team plans observability and audit export are not available.
Claude for Word
Pros
- ✓Reads the whole open document, including comments, tracked changes, footnotes, tables and bookmarks, and accesses only that document. For contract review that scope is the point rather than a limitation.
- ✓Tracked changes mode lands every edit as a revision in Word's own review pane. Claude can work through comment threads, editing the anchored text and replying with what it changed, and it summarizes counterparty redlines.
- ✓With a Claude account, one conversation spans Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, so a memo can draw on a workbook or an email thread without re-explaining the data. Enabled Skills apply in each app as the work moves.
Limitations
- –Not included in Enterprise audit logs, and the add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings. Compliance API coverage exists for Enterprise organizations but is still labeled public beta.
- –Anthropic does not recommend it for litigation filings, audit-critical documents or counterparty sends without human review, nor for replacing legal or financial judgment. It also warns about prompt injection from untrusted documents.
- –Routing through Bedrock, Vertex AI, Foundry or an LLM gateway drops cross-app work, dictation and file uploads, and connectors and Skills are listed as coming soon there. It does not run on Word 2016 or 2019 perpetual licenses, iPad or Android.
