Pros & Limitations
Editorial assessmentClaude for Word
Pros
- ✓Reads the whole open document, including comments, tracked changes, footnotes, tables and bookmarks, and accesses only that document. For contract review that scope is the point rather than a limitation.
- ✓Tracked changes mode lands every edit as a revision in Word's own review pane. Claude can work through comment threads, editing the anchored text and replying with what it changed, and it summarizes counterparty redlines.
- ✓With a Claude account, one conversation spans Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, so a memo can draw on a workbook or an email thread without re-explaining the data. Enabled Skills apply in each app as the work moves.
Limitations
- –Not included in Enterprise audit logs, and the add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings. Compliance API coverage exists for Enterprise organizations but is still labeled public beta.
- –Anthropic does not recommend it for litigation filings, audit-critical documents or counterparty sends without human review, nor for replacing legal or financial judgment. It also warns about prompt injection from untrusted documents.
- –Routing through Bedrock, Vertex AI, Foundry or an LLM gateway drops cross-app work, dictation and file uploads, and connectors and Skills are listed as coming soon there. It does not run on Word 2016 or 2019 perpetual licenses, iPad or Android.
Cohere
Pros
- ✓Deploys in a virtual private cloud, on premises, air-gapped, through Cohere-managed Model Vault or on OCI, Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.
- ✓North 2 combines agents, automations, skills, memory and app creation with connectors to Slack, SharePoint, Salesforce, Jira, Notion and GitHub plus custom MCP tools, and runs Cohere or customer-supplied models.
- ✓Model prices are published, Command A+ and North Mini Code are free under Apache 2.0, and the Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001.
Limitations
- –North and Compass have no published price: both start with a demo, and the free Trial API key covers the models only, rate limited and not for production use.
- –On the hosted SaaS Platform, prompts and generations may be used for model training unless the Data Controls toggle is switched off.
- –The HIPAA Business Associate Agreement covers custom model development only, and Cohere asks customers not to send protected health information through its SaaS services.
