Claude for Excel

Claude for Excel is Anthropic's native Microsoft Excel add-in, part of the Claude for Microsoft 365 suite (alongside Claude for PowerPoint, Claude for Word, and Claude for Outlook in Beta). Released in October 2025 and made generally available March 11, 2026, it lets professionals work with Claude directly inside Excel via a sidebar panel. Open with Ctrl+Option+C (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+C (Windows). Capabilities confirmed live on the support page: ask Claude about any cell, formula, or worksheet with cell-level citations that navigate directly to referenced cells; update assumptions across an entire model while preserving all formula dependencies; debug errors including REF, VALUE, and circular references; build new financial models from scratch or populate existing templates; and navigate complex multi-tab workbooks. Connectors now bring context from external tools directly into Excel workbooks. Supports .xlsx and .xlsm files. The March 2026 release unified Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook under the Claude for Microsoft 365 brand at claude.com/claude-for-microsoft-365. Shared cross-app context means a financial analyst can pull comparable company financials in Excel, build a comps table, and drop the valuation summary into a PowerPoint pitch deck without re-explaining the dataset. Anthropic financial services Skills are available by default; admins or individuals can upload additional Skills for custom workflows. Named gaps: VBA macros, pivot table refreshes from external connections, and some Power Query operations are outside the current scope; Claude for Excel does not yet appear in Enterprise audit logs or Compliance API, a gap for regulated industries requiring full action traceability; and Anthropic explicitly warns against using Claude for Excel with untrusted downloaded templates or vendor files due to prompt injection risk from hidden cell instructions. Pricing is bundled into Claude subscriptions with no separate Claude for Excel fee, verified via the support help center as of May 2026. Available on Pro at $17 per month billed annually (or $20 monthly), Max 5x at $100 per month, Max 20x at $200 per month, Team, and Enterprise (custom). Enterprise deployment supports LLM gateway routing through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry, giving regulated industries flexibility within existing cloud and compliance setups. Inputs and outputs are auto-deleted within 30 days; overwrite protection warns before data loss. Claude for Excel is not the right fit for organizations on the Microsoft 365 Copilot stack that want a single integrated AI vendor: Microsoft Copilot for Excel is embedded in M365 without requiring a separate Anthropic subscription. Teams requiring Compliance API audit logs should note that Claude for Excel does not yet inherit custom data retention or appear in Enterprise audit logs, meaning full action traceability is not yet available for regulated industry procurement. Users who work primarily outside Excel and need broader workflow automation should evaluate Claude Cowork, which handles multi-step file and task orchestration across the full desktop rather than within a single application. Current state Q2 2026: Anthropic consolidated all Microsoft Office add-ins under the Claude for Microsoft 365 brand, adding Claude for Outlook (Beta) as a fourth add-in for inbox triage, reply drafting, and calendar scheduling.
