Claude for Excel
by Anthropic
Anthropic's native Excel add-in for spreadsheet work -- part of the Claude for Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word). Reads multi-tab workbooks, explains formulas with cell-level citations, builds models, debugs errors, and shares context with Claude for PowerPoint. Pro $17/mo annual.
Claude for Excel is Anthropic's native Microsoft Excel add-in, part of the Claude for Office suite (alongside Claude for PowerPoint and Claude for Word). Released in October 2025 and made generally available March 11 2026 with shared cross-app context, it lets professionals work with Claude directly inside Excel via a sidebar panel. Open with Ctrl+Option+C (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+C (Windows). Capabilities: ask Claude about any cell, formula, or worksheet with cell-level citations that navigate directly to referenced cells; update assumptions across an entire model while preserving all formula dependencies; create pivot tables and charts; trace #REF!, #VALUE!, and circular reference errors to their source; build new financial models from scratch or populate existing templates. Supports .xlsx and .xlsm files. Anthropic ships Skills (one-click reusable workflows) and the Anthropic financial services skills are available by default; admins or individuals can upload more. The March 11 2026 release added shared context with Claude for PowerPoint, so a financial analyst can pull comparable company financials in Excel, build a comps table, and drop the valuation summary into a pitch deck without re-explaining the dataset. Pricing is bundled into Claude subscriptions: Pro $17/month annual or $20 monthly, Max from $100/month, Team $20/seat, Enterprise custom -- no separate Claude for Excel subscription. Enterprise deployment supports LLM gateway routing through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry, giving regulated industries flexibility within existing cloud and compliance setups. Inputs and outputs are auto-deleted within 30 days; overwrite protection warns before data loss; session logging tracks each turn. Best fit: financial analysts building comps and DCF models, FP&A teams running variance analyses, accountants reconciling complex multi-tab workbooks, and consultants who need explainable spreadsheet AI with audit trails. Not appropriate for users without paid Claude subscriptions, organizations on the M365 Copilot stack who want a single integrated AI vendor (use Microsoft Copilot for Excel), or teams needing Compliance API audit logs (Claude for Excel does not yet inherit custom data retention or appear in Enterprise audit logs). Capabilities
Pros & Limitations
Editorial assessmentPros
- ✓Cell-level citations with clickable navigation -- every explanation traces back to specific cells, formulas, and tabs, providing audit-ready transparency that competitors using AI in Excel routinely lack
- ✓Native shared context with Claude for PowerPoint and Word -- analysts can build a comps table in Excel and have Claude carry that data into a pitch deck or report draft without re-explaining, eliminating cross-app friction
- ✓Enterprise gateway flexibility (Bedrock, Vertex AI, Microsoft Foundry) -- regulated industries can route inference through existing cloud providers without forcing a new vendor relationship through Anthropic's direct API
Limitations
- ⚠Not yet captured in Enterprise audit logs or Compliance API and does not inherit custom data retention settings -- material gap for procurement teams in regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, legal) that require full action traceability before deploying AI in spreadsheets
- ⚠Cannot perform certain advanced Excel operations -- VBA macros, pivot table refreshes from external connections, and some Power Query operations are outside the add-in's current scope, requiring manual work for those workflows
- ⚠Prompt injection risk in untrusted spreadsheets -- Anthropic explicitly warns against using Claude for Excel with downloaded templates, vendor files, or external data imports, since malicious instructions can be hidden in cells, formulas, or comments
