Claude for Outlook is Anthropic's Outlook add-in, the fourth of four Office agents alongside Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Anthropic states that it is currently in beta and available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It is the only one of the four still carrying a beta designation. The vendor is unusually specific about who it is for: professionals whose work runs through email, and it names private equity and investment banking associates managing deal flow, in-house legal teams running counterparty negotiations, and consultants tracking multiple client threads. What it does. Triage an unread inbox into what needs you, what Claude can handle and what is noise. Draft replies, reply-alls and forwards in your voice, which land unsent in Outlook's compose pane. Summarize long threads into decisions made, open items and who owes what, with per-email citations. Read .docx and .xlsx attachments inline without opening them. Find meeting times across attendees and draft invites into Outlook's native appointment form. Produce a one-page brief of recent threads and attached documents before a meeting. The autonomy boundary is stated by the vendor rather than inferred: Claude never sends mail or invites on its own, and every draft lands unsent for review. Anthropic also publishes what it does not recommend during the beta. That list is unattended sending, client-facing or counterparty correspondence without reading the draft first, replacing your judgment on which emails matter, and mailboxes holding privileged or regulated data without appropriate organizational controls. Connectors and Skills are the extension layer across all four Office agents and are built on the Model Context Protocol, so Claude for Outlook consumes external context rather than exposing a server of its own. Anthropic notes that when you connect through a third-party platform such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway, connectors and Skills may not be available. Compatibility is narrower than the other three add-ins and it is a procurement gate rather than a detail. Claude for Outlook runs on Outlook on the web, on Outlook for Windows in both the new and classic clients, and on Outlook for Mac, each with a Microsoft 365 subscription. It does not run on Outlook 2016 or 2019 perpetual or volume-licensed editions, on iOS, on Android, or on mailboxes hosted on Exchange on-premises. Exchange Online through Microsoft 365 is required. Pricing is bundled into the Claude subscription with no separate Claude for Outlook fee. Pro is $17 per month on an annual subscription or $20 billed monthly, Max 5x is $100 per month, Max 20x is $200 per month, Team is $20 per seat per month, and Enterprise is quoted rather than published. Security is confirmed on trust.anthropic.com and on claude.com/solutions/enterprise, which states "SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, and CCPA compliance" in its own enterprise feature list. Anthropic publishes the audit gap plainly. Claude for Outlook does not inherit custom data retention settings an organization may have configured and is not included in Enterprise audit logs. An OpenTelemetry export to your own tooling exists, and Anthropic states that on Pro, Max and Team plans observability and audit export are not available at all. Current state Q3 2026: Claude Fable 5 access was restored on July 1, 2026 after export controls were lifted on June 30, and Sonnet 5 launched on June 30. Claude for Outlook remains in beta while Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word are all generally available.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • The autonomy boundary is published by the vendor rather than inferred. Claude never sends mail or invites on its own, and every draft lands unsent in the compose pane, which is the guarantee an email tool has to make before anyone will deploy it.
  • Thread summaries carry per-email citations, so a summary of decisions made and who owes what can be checked against the specific message it came from rather than taken on trust.
  • Reads .docx and .xlsx attachments inline without opening them, and shares context with Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word, so a thread and its attachments can flow into a model or a deck.

Limitations

  • Still in beta, and the only one of the four Office agents that is. Anthropic publishes a recommended-use section for the beta and advises against unattended sending or counterparty correspondence without reading the draft first.
  • Compatibility is a hard gate. It requires Exchange Online through Microsoft 365 and does not run on Exchange on-premises mailboxes, on Outlook 2016 or 2019 perpetual or volume editions, or on iOS or Android.
  • Activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs and the add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings. Anthropic states that on Pro, Max and Team plans observability and audit export are not available at all, so the OpenTelemetry mitigation is Enterprise-only.
