The facts

Meta Business Agent is Meta's AI agent for businesses, launched globally on June 3, 2026. It enables businesses of all sizes to respond to every customer across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram as if they had an infinite team behind them. The agent autonomously answers customer questions, makes personalized product recommendations, books appointments, and facilitates sales conversations, all grounded in the business's own catalog, public profile, website, business description, address, and hours. Over one million businesses were already using it at launch, with more than one billion active business threads daily across Meta's messaging platforms. Beyond customer-facing responses, Meta Business Agent doubles as an operational partner for business owners. It delivers a morning briefing that catches you up on chats you missed overnight and provides insights on your threads. An AI handoff list flags the conversations that need a person, and the agent can be set either to answer customers directly or to learn from the owner's own replies. Meta has said it will expand the agent further into day-to-day operations with market research, product insights, and competitive intelligence. Calendar management has already shipped. Integration depth centers on Meta's own messaging ecosystem. The agent operates natively across the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite. Google Calendar connects for appointment scheduling, with the agent granted permission to view and edit calendar entries, and Google Drive connects so that selected files feed the agent's knowledge, and a Drive sync can take up to 12 hours. Both connections are made from the WhatsApp Business mobile app and cannot be set up on WhatsApp Web. For enterprise deployments, the Meta Business Agent Platform provides API infrastructure to build, customize, and deploy agents at scale. The agent is powered by Meta's Llama model family. Meta publishes official remote MCP servers for its developer platform, but the documented server covers developer tooling rather than the Business Agent product surface, and there are no confirmed native CRM integrations. Pricing has two surfaces and they are charged differently. For small businesses running the agent inside the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, or Meta Business Suite, Meta publishes no charge for the agent itself and requires no subscription. For businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta charges one global rate of $2.00 USD per 1 million tokens, effective August 1, 2026. A typical interaction of 20,000 to 25,000 tokens works out to roughly $0.04 to $0.05 per message. The charge is a single blended rate covering both AI agent processing and message delivery. Sixteen currencies are enabled on the platform: an account created in a non-USD currency is invoiced in that currency at a daily exchange rate, while the published rate itself is USD. Meta bills through monthly invoicing against a credit line, and Meta Business Agent messages are not delivered at all unless a credit line is attached to the account. Meta Business Agent is also the only message category that is not free inside the 72-hour free entry point window: delivery stays free there, but token usage is still charged. Separately, businesses without a payment method on file by September 30, 2026 stop having service messages delivered from October 1, 2026, when utility messages sent in response to users become chargeable again. Who Meta Business Agent is not for: businesses that need omnichannel coverage beyond Meta's messaging platforms. The agent operates on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram and does not handle email, phone, website live chat, or SMS. Intercom Fin ($0.99 per resolution) covers web chat, email, and social. Zendesk AI (from $55/mo billed annually) spans email, phone, chat, and social. Salesforce Agentforce (custom pricing) provides support across all channels within the Salesforce ecosystem. Current state Q3 2026: Meta Business Agent launched globally on June 3, 2026 across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, and the Meta Business Agent Platform went live for partners on July 1, 2026. Meta published token pricing of $2.00 USD per 1 million tokens effective August 1, 2026, alongside a further change effective October 1, 2026 that ends free service messages, and its pricing documentation still carries a July 1, 2026 revision date and presents both as upcoming. Google Calendar and Google Drive connections are live. Market research, product insights, and competitive intelligence remain limited to selected businesses with a waitlist, and the agent is available only to eligible businesses in select markets and select languages.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Over one million businesses active at launch with more than one billion daily business threads across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram: Meta Business Agent has the largest distribution footprint of any AI agent in the customer support category, reaching customers where they already message businesses.
  • Meta publishes no charge for running the agent inside the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, or Meta Business Suite, and requires no subscription: small businesses can deploy an autonomous agent handling questions, product recommendations, appointments, and sales without a platform contract, while metered charges apply only on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
  • Morning briefing feature delivers overnight conversation summaries and thread insights to business owners, functioning as an operational intelligence layer beyond simple customer response automation.

Limitations

  • Operates only on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, with no email, phone, website live chat, or SMS coverage.
  • Turning the agent on automatically disables greeting and away messages, and restoring them means deleting the agent. Broadcast lists and disappearing messages are also affected, and existing linked devices are disconnected, with WhatsApp for Windows, Android tablets, and WearOS unable to re-link afterwards.
  • Availability is limited to eligible businesses in select countries, with a waitlist for wider access. Not all languages are supported and the language the agent uses is set by the business's phone number rather than chosen. Meta notes that AI-generated messages may not be accurate or appropriate.
