Jules

Jules is an asynchronous coding agent from Google Labs. A developer picks a GitHub repository and describes a task, and Jules copies the code to a fresh cloud virtual machine, installs dependencies, shows its plan for review, makes the changes and opens a pull request. Tasks run in the background, so developers can leave and come back to finished work, and they can steer a task while it runs. Google took Jules out of public beta and made it available to everyone on August 6, 2025, when it reported that beta users had shared more than 140,000 code improvements publicly.

Jules has three plans. The free plan allows 15 tasks in a rolling 24 hours and 3 at once. Jules in Pro, included with Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month in the US), allows 100 daily tasks and 15 at once, and Jules in Ultra, included with Google AI Ultra (from $99.99 a month in the US), allows 300 daily tasks and 60 at once. All plans use Gemini models, with paid plans getting higher or priority access to the latest model. Paid plans currently require an individual Google account ending in @gmail.com: Workspace and enterprise accounts cannot upgrade yet, and Google points business power users to an interest form. Google says Jules does not train on private repository content.

Beyond one-off tasks, Jules can suggest tasks by scanning a codebase for TODO comments and performance improvements, run scheduled tasks daily, weekly or monthly, and fix failing GitHub Actions checks on its own pull requests. A Planning Critic agent reviews plans that run without human approval. Jules connects to Render to fix failed deployments and to a vetted list of MCP servers (Linear, Stitch, Neon, Tinybird, Context7 and Supabase), and it has a command-line tool and a REST API, including tasks without a repository. Commits can be authored by Jules, by the user or by both.

Teams comparing cloud coding agents should also look at Devin and Cursor Cloud Agent, and developers who want an open-source agent they can self-host should consider OpenHands. Jules works best with JavaScript and TypeScript, Python, Go, Java and Rust, cannot run long-lived processes such as dev servers in its setup scripts, and only allows MCP servers from its approved list.

Current state Q4 2026: Jules is generally available, the Jules docs and the Google One plans page still carry some older beta and model wording, and paid plans remain limited to personal Gmail accounts.
