Jules

Jules is Google's autonomous AI coding agent, designed to handle end-to-end software development tasks including code modifications, bug fixes, feature implementation, and testing. Launched as a Google Labs project in December 2024, Jules entered public beta in March 2026 and reached general availability at Google I/O 2026 on May 19. During the beta period, thousands of developers completed tens of thousands of tasks resulting in over 140,000 code improvements shared publicly. Jules operates as a hosted cloud service: developers submit tasks through the web interface or directly from GitHub issues, Jules clones the repository into a secure Google Cloud VM, executes multi-file changes autonomously, and opens a pull request for review. Tasks run asynchronously in the background, meaning developers can close their computer and return hours later to completed work. The task-based pricing model (15/100/300 daily tasks per tier) structurally aligns cost with output rather than seat time. The free tier runs on Gemini 3 Flash for fast execution on straightforward tasks. Pro and Ultra tiers run on Gemini 3.1 Pro with improved multi-step problem solving, complex instruction alignment, and multi-file coordination. Context windows support loading entire large codebases without retrieval augmentation. Jules surfaces its plan and reasoning before making changes, and developers can steer work mid-execution. Integration depth covers GitHub for repository access, issue-based task triggering, and PR creation. MCP server integrations are available through a security-vetted partner program with Linear, Stitch, Neon, Tinybird, Context7, and Supabase. Android Studio CLI integration enables Jules to invoke build systems, emulators, and test runners programmatically for fully automated build-test-iterate loops. Firebase AI Logic provides agent-native backend persistence with authentication, Firestore data, and Cloud Functions. Scheduled tasks support recurring development work. Pricing follows a freemium model across three tiers. Free provides 15 daily tasks (rolling 24-hour window) and 3 concurrent tasks with Gemini 3 Flash. Pro at $19.99/month (via Google AI Pro subscription) provides 100 daily tasks and 15 concurrent tasks with Gemini 3.1 Pro. Ultra at $124.99/month (via Google AI Ultra subscription) provides 300 daily tasks and 60 concurrent tasks with priority model access. Paid plans are currently available for individual Google Accounts (@gmail.com only). Google Workspace and enterprise accounts are not yet supported, with Google actively working on upgrade paths. Jules is not the right fit for teams needing Google Workspace or enterprise account support, which is not yet available on paid tiers. Teams requiring an open MCP ecosystem should note that Jules restricts MCP server connections to a vetted partner list for security reasons, limiting workflow integrations versus tools with open MCP ecosystems like Cline or Goose. Developers who prefer synchronous IDE-embedded AI should evaluate Cursor ($20/month) or Claude Code ($20/month), which provide immediate interactive responses within the editor. Jules operates asynchronously by design. Current state Q2 2026: Jules reached general availability at Google I/O 2026. Gemini 3.1 Pro is the active model for paid tiers, replacing the earlier Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Pro. Android Studio CLI is now stable and GA, enabling Jules to invoke builds, emulators, and test runners programmatically. Firebase AI Logic provides agent-native backend persistence. Jules V2 (internally referenced as "Jitro") is in development with a goal-oriented approach moving beyond prompt-and-execute to KPI-driven development. Jules operates under Google Cloud's security and compliance infrastructure including SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.
