The facts

Chatbase is the no-code platform for building custom AI chatbots and AI agents trained on your knowledge base, designed for businesses that want to deploy AI-powered customer service on their websites without engineering resources. Founded in 2023 during the early ChatGPT wave, Chatbase serves 10,000+ businesses globally with hundreds of thousands of AI agents created across customer service, lead generation, and internal knowledge use cases. Pricing follows a tiered subscription model with monthly and annual billing (annual saves 20%); all rates are in USD. Free covers 50 message credits/month, 1 agent, no AI Actions, and 400KB per agent (agents deleted after 14 days of inactivity). Hobby is $40/month, or $32/month billed annually ($384/year), covering 500 message credits, 5 AI Actions per agent, 10MB per agent, 2 members, integrations, basic analytics, and attachments. Standard is $150/month ($120/month billed annually, $1,440/year), adding 4,000 message credits, voice, telephony, helpdesk, API access, Stripe, Zendesk, Salesforce, Intercom, HubSpot, and auto-retraining. Pro is $500/month ($400/month billed annually, $4,800/year), covering 15,000 message credits, 12 AI Actions per agent, advanced analytics, and source suggestions. Enterprise is custom-priced (contact sales) with higher limits, SSO, white-labeling, audit logs, priority support, and HIPAA eligibility with a BAA. Chatbase's differentiation versus Intercom Fin, Sierra, and enterprise-grade AI customer service platforms is the no-code accessibility and rapid deployment: Chatbase users upload knowledge documents (PDFs, website URLs, Notion exports), configure a persona, and deploy a working AI agent within hours. The platform supports OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Meta Llama, MoonshotAI, Mistral, and Z.ai models, giving teams model choice without platform lock-in. Data privacy is explicit: Chatbase does not use customer data to train AI models, relying on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to generate responses from uploaded knowledge. AI Actions extend the platform beyond chatbot responses into agentic capabilities: agents can execute API calls, update CRMs, send emails, and integrate with Zapier, Twilio, Shopify, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Calendly, and WordPress. The Standard plan and above include voice and telephony support, expanding Chatbase from text-only chatbots into voice-capable AI customer service. Chatbase now also connects to major helpdesks including Zendesk, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Help Scout, and Gorgias, and can use existing tickets as a knowledge source, closing an earlier gap in ticketing and ecommerce support integrations. Chatbase is not the right fit for enterprise teams needing deep omnichannel routing, agent collaboration workflows, or compliance beyond SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, and HIPAA. Intercom (from $29/mo billed annually) provides deeper team inbox and human-agent collaboration. Zendesk provides enterprise-grade omnichannel contact center capabilities. Q3 2026 state: HIPAA compliance launched May 25, 2026 for Enterprise customers with a BAA, automatically enabling Zero Data Retention on the workspace. Voice and telephony are available on the Standard plan and above. LLM support expanded to include DeepSeek, Meta Llama, MoonshotAI, Mistral, and Z.ai. Helpdesk integrations (Zendesk, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Help Scout, Gorgias) and tickets-as-a-source were added. SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, and HIPAA all confirmed on the Chatbase Trust Center; no AI training confirmed in the privacy policy.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • No-code deployment produces the fastest time-to-live-agent in the category: upload knowledge documents, configure persona, and deploy a working AI agent within hours without engineering resources, materially faster than enterprise alternatives requiring weeks of configuration.
  • Explicit no-training data policy confirmed in privacy policy: Chatbase does not use customer data to train AI models and relies on RAG to generate responses, with HIPAA Enterprise deployments automatically enabling Zero Data Retention on the workspace.
  • Model-agnostic architecture supporting OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, Meta, MoonshotAI, Mistral, and Z.ai: teams choose the model that best fits their accuracy and cost requirements without platform lock-in, and can swap models without rebuilding the agent.

Limitations

  • AI accuracy depends entirely on knowledge base quality: Chatbase agents are only as accurate as the uploaded documentation, meaning users without curated content get poorer resolution quality than enterprise AI customer service tools with dedicated AI training pipelines.
  • Newer, lighter helpdesk than dedicated contact-center platforms: while Chatbase added a Helpdesk feature, ticket integrations (Zendesk, Freshdesk, Gorgias, Help Scout), and tickets-as-a-source, it still lacks the mature shared inbox, SLA management, omnichannel routing, and agent-collaboration depth that integrated customer service platforms provide.
  • Message credit pricing creates cost unpredictability at high conversation volumes: variable monthly usage based on conversation volume makes budget planning harder than per-seat alternatives, particularly for businesses with seasonal traffic spikes.
