Open-source memory layer for AI agents. Free tier with 10K memories, paid plans from $19/month. Powers persistent, personalised AI interactions across sessions.

Mem0 (pronounced "mem-zero") is the most widely adopted AI agent memory framework, backed by $24M from YC, Basis Set Ventures, and Peak XV. It adds a persistent memory layer to any AI agent or assistant with as little as three lines of code using LLM-based extraction and semantic search retrieval. 57,100+ GitHub stars as of May 2026. The core value proposition is eliminating the stateless problem in AI agents. Every time an AI agent starts a new conversation without Mem0, it begins from scratch with no knowledge of previous interactions, user preferences, or established context. Mem0 intercepts conversations, extracts what is worth remembering using an LLM, stores it in a vector database (or graph database on Pro and above), and retrieves the most relevant memories at the start of each new session. The result is AI agents and assistants that remember users, accumulate knowledge over time, and personalize interactions based on history. AWS selected Mem0 as the exclusive memory provider for their Agent SDK, representing the strongest enterprise validation in the category. Used in production by thousands of teams with native integrations for CrewAI, Flowise, and Langflow. Nineteen vector store backends are supported including Qdrant, Chroma, PGVector, Pinecone, Azure AI Search, and Amazon S3 Vectors. The official OpenMemory MCP server enables direct integration with Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible AI tools. The Mem0 platform API is language-agnostic and available as Python and Node.js SDKs. Pricing has four tiers. Hobby (free): 10,000 memories, 1,000 retrieval calls per month. Starter ($19/month): 50,000 memories, 5,000 retrieval calls. Pro ($249/month): unlimited memories, graph memory for entity relationship tracking, analytics, and private Slack access. Enterprise (custom pricing): on-premise deployment, SSO, HIPAA BAA, and dedicated SLA. The jump from Starter to Pro is the most commonly cited developer complaint. Graph memory and analytics are locked behind Pro, meaning the $19 tier provides vector-only retrieval with no intermediate option for teams needing entity relationship tracking or usage dashboards. Mem0 is HIPAA-compliant and holds SOC 2 Type I certification with SOC 2 Type II audit underway as of Q2 2026, confirmed from the mem0.ai/security page. SOC 2 Type II certification is pending. Business customer data is governed by separate DPA agreements rather than the public privacy policy. A high-severity SQL and Cypher injection vulnerability (CVSS 8.1) was disclosed April 17, 2026 affecting PGVector, Azure MySQL, and Neptune Analytics backends. Teams should verify patch status before deploying to production. Mem0 is not the right fit for teams that need simple conversation history storage rather than semantic memory. LangChain and LlamaIndex include basic memory primitives for linear conversation history without the semantic extraction layer. Zep Cloud serves teams that need structured entity tracking with stronger temporal reasoning benchmarks than Mem0 achieved on LongMemEval prior to the April 2026 algorithm update. Teams building consumer-facing apps where HIPAA or enterprise compliance is not required and cost is the primary constraint can start with vector database providers (Pinecone, Qdrant) and implement basic memory directly rather than paying for the Mem0 abstraction layer. Current state as of Q2 2026: Mem0 released a new token-efficient memory algorithm in April 2026 built on single-pass hierarchical extraction and multi-signal retrieval, improving temporal query performance by 29.6 points and multi-hop reasoning by 23.1 points over the prior algorithm. February 2026 platform updates added temporal search filtering for time-based queries, memory categorization webhooks, and improved semantic ranking recall. G2 profile is unclaimed with no reviews at time of audit.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Three-line integration that works with any LLM or agent framework: lowest integration friction of any memory layer in the category, with 19 vector store backends and native integrations for CrewAI, Flowise, Langflow, and Vercel AI SDK.
  • AWS exclusive memory provider for their Agent SDK: strong enterprise credibility signal, plus official OpenMemory MCP server for direct AI assistant integration across Claude, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible tools.
  • 57,100+ GitHub stars and 100K+ developers: the most widely adopted AI memory layer with the deepest community, documentation, and benchmark research including the ECAI 2025 paper and the April 2026 token-efficient algorithm.

Limitations

  • Steep pricing jump from Starter ($19/month) to Pro ($249/month): graph memory and analytics are locked behind Pro, making the $19 tier vector-only retrieval with no intermediate option for teams that need more than basic search
  • LongMemEval temporal reasoning score of 49% trails competitors on the prior algorithm: Zep scores 63.8% and Hindsight reaches 91.4%, though the April 2026 algorithm update shows significant improvement on temporal and multi-hop tasks
  • High-severity security vulnerability (CVSS 8.1) disclosed April 17, 2026 affecting PGVector, Azure MySQL, and Neptune Analytics backends: verify patch status at mem0.ai before production deployment
