The facts

Trengo is a European-headquartered omnichannel customer engagement platform that unifies WhatsApp, email, voice, web chat, SMS, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger in a single agent workspace. Its autonomous AI Agent (previously marketed as AI HelpMate) resolves routine conversations without human involvement. Founded in Utrecht, Netherlands in 2017, Trengo serves thousands of businesses, with particular strength among SMB and mid-market teams in the Netherlands, the DACH region, the UK, and the wider EMEA market where US-first competitors have less localized depth. WhatsApp Business is genuinely native rather than retrofitted, which matters in European, LATAM, and APAC markets where WhatsApp dominates customer communication. The platform integrates with Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce, HubSpot, Salesforce, and 100+ other business tools. AI Journeys automates multi-step conversation flows across channels, and AI Voice extends automated support to inbound and outbound calls. There is no official MCP support as of Q2 2026. Pricing is conversation-volume based and quoted in USD, with a currency selector that also offers EUR and GBP. Boost is $341 per month on an annual commitment ($398 month-to-month) and includes 10 users and 6,000 conversations per year. Pro is $569 per month annually ($683 month-to-month) and includes 20 users and 18,000 conversations per year, adding advanced analytics, phone support, and a dedicated success manager. Enterprise is custom-priced, and annual billing saves up to 20%. The entry price does not cover overages or AI at volume. Additional conversations run $17 to $21 per 100, extra users are $28 to $34 each on Boost and $46 to $57 on Pro, and AI-handled conversations carry a $0.28 to $0.34 per-conversation surcharge (annual to monthly). At high AI resolution volume this three-part model of base tier, per-user, and per-AI-conversation is harder to forecast than a flat per-seat plan. Trengo is not the right fit for US enterprise buyers needing Fortune 500 peer references, large-scale SLA management, or enterprise contact-center voice infrastructure. Zendesk (from $55/mo billed annually) and Intercom (from $29/mo billed annually) offer deeper enterprise capabilities and a stronger US presence. Teams outside WhatsApp-dominant markets get less differentiation from Trengo versus a horizontal helpdesk. Q2 2026 state: the AI resolution product is now branded AI Agent, previously AI HelpMate, and is included in both Boost and Pro. Trengo advertises up to 80% of conversations resolved automatically, and AI Voice is live as a product line. The platform is hosted on AWS Frankfurt with EU data residency and TLS encryption in transit. GDPR is the confirmed compliance framework; Trengo does not list SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 in its security documentation as of Q2 2026.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • WhatsApp is a genuinely native channel, not a retrofit. That depth is materially valuable for European, LATAM, and APAC service patterns where WhatsApp, not email or live chat, is the dominant customer channel.
  • European-first design brings GDPR compliance and AWS Frankfurt EU data residency by default. Localization and multilingual support are built in rather than adapted from a US-first product.
  • The AI Agent is included in both paid plans with no separate AI platform fee. Boost is $341 per month and Pro is $569 per month on annual billing, with AI-handled conversations billed at $0.28 to $0.34 each.

Limitations

  • US brand recognition and partner ecosystem are thin. Integration coverage for US-specific tools trails Zendesk and Intercom, which matters for teams evaluating from a US procurement view.
  • Autonomous-resolution depth lags AI-native challengers. Trengo advertises up to 80% resolution, but its agentic capabilities are less advanced than Sierra, Decagon, or Intercom Fin.
  • Billing has three moving parts: base tier, per-user add-ons, and a per-AI-conversation surcharge. At $0.28 to $0.34 per AI conversation on top of base and user costs, spend is hard to forecast at high volume.
