Open-source conversational AI platform for developers and product teams. Visual flow design, multi-LLM support, and self-hosting under MIT license. Free plan; Plus from $150 per month.

Botpress is an open-source conversational AI platform founded in 2017 that has become one of the leading alternatives to Voiceflow and Microsoft Copilot Studio for teams prioritizing self-hosting flexibility, open-source values, and platform-agnostic deployment. The platform combines visual flow design (Botpress Studio) with an Autonomous Engine for LLM-guided conversations, built-in knowledge base integration, and deployment across web chat, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Microsoft Teams, Discord, Slack, and custom channels through API webhooks. The open-source codebase at github.com/botpress/botpress carries over 14,700 GitHub stars and the platform is used by over 600,000 developers globally including Kia, Electronic Arts, Husqvarna, Windstream, and Shell. In April 2025 Botpress raised a $25M Series B led by Framework Ventures with participation from HubSpot and Deloitte. Deep native integrations in the Botpress Hub include Zendesk (bi-directional ticket lookup and creation), WhatsApp Business API, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, Instagram, HubSpot, Notion, Jira, Calendly, and Stripe. The platform supports custom REST API integrations via code steps and, since March 2026, native MCP port configuration in the ADK CLI, allowing agents to connect to hosted MCP servers. Named gaps: no native Salesforce CRM integration without custom API code, no native Pipedrive or Freshdesk connector in the Hub, and no native voice channel below Enterprise tier. Teams requiring Salesforce or enterprise CRM sync must build custom webhook flows or use a third-party connector. WhatsApp is available from Plus tier; voice is gated to Enterprise and requires a custom contract. Botpress repriced its cloud offering in May 2026, moving from a messages-based to a conversation-based model and folding AI usage costs into all paid plans. Free: $0 with 100 conversations per month, 1 seat, and 3 AI agents. Plus: $150 per month billed annually with 250 conversations included and additional packs at $65 per 100 conversations, 3 seats, and unlimited AI agents. Team: $750 per month billed annually with 1,500 conversations included and overage packs at $50 per 100 conversations, unlimited seats, RBAC, team analytics, and real-time collaboration. Enterprise is custom pricing with dedicated support, SLA, custom storage, custom conversation volume, and a BAA confirming HIPAA compliance. Annual billing saves 20 percent versus monthly. Self-hosted V12 is available free under MIT license for teams requiring full code control and data residency with no conversation limits, though self-hosting carries engineering overhead for deployment and maintenance. Botpress is not the right fit for non-technical product and design teams who need a polished visual prototyping environment: Voiceflow at $60 per editor per month on its Pro plan offers superior design-team ergonomics with version control, design system enforcement, and prototype testing built for product managers and UX designers rather than developers. Microsoft Copilot Studio at $200 per month for 25,000 messages is the stronger fit for Microsoft 365 organizations where SharePoint knowledge base integration and IT governance are requirements rather than optional add-ons. Teams with straightforward customer support needs that want a purpose-built helpdesk without building conversation flows should evaluate Intercom Fin at $0.99 per resolution, which includes the full ticketing layer that Botpress requires custom configuration to replicate. Teams needing enterprise voice IVR out of the box should look at Voiceflow or dedicated telephony platforms such as Vapi, since Botpress voice is gated behind Enterprise and requires a custom contract. Current state Q2 2026: Botpress completed a significant pricing overhaul in May 2026, replacing messages-based billing with conversation-based pricing and folding AI usage into all paid plans. The Managed plan tier was retired and replaced by Built For You, a custom-quoted end-to-end service where Botpress engineers build and maintain agents. The Desk product launched as an integrated AI helpdesk combining bot and human conversations in a single interface. MCP support was added to the ADK CLI in March 2026 via configurable port settings, enabling agents to connect to hosted MCP servers. No ISO 27001 certification has been announced as of this audit.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Open-source MIT-licensed with full self-hosting flexibility, no vendor lock-in, and deployment in any environment including on-premise with no conversation limits
  • Multi-LLM support across OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Gemini, and Mistral with AI usage now included in all paid cloud plans, eliminating the unpredictable AI Spend billing that existed before May 2026
  • Conversation-based cloud pricing starting free with a 600,000-plus developer community, 100-plus Hub integrations, and native MCP support added to the ADK CLI in March 2026

Limitations

  • Enterprise governance features including granular RBAC, advanced audit logs, and HIPAA BAA are gated to Enterprise tier, requiring a custom contract for regulated industry deployments
  • Self-hosting V12 requires meaningful engineering investment to deploy, secure, patch, and maintain compared to fully managed alternatives like Voiceflow or Microsoft Copilot Studio
  • Voice channel is Enterprise-only in the cloud offering, meaning teams on Plus or Team must use third-party telephony integrations or negotiate a custom Enterprise contract to access voice IVR
