Litmaps

Litmaps is a literature discovery and monitoring tool for researchers, built by Litmap Limited in Wellington, New Zealand. A user starts from one or more seed papers, and Litmaps searches the citation network around them and shows the results as an interactive map of connected papers. Search offers three recommendation algorithms, and Litmaps describes one of them, Similar Text, as using AI-driven semantic analysis. Its database covers more than 270 million articles drawn from Crossref, Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex. Litmaps says it is used by more than 350,000 researchers in 150 countries, at more than 16,000 universities, government bodies and other research organizations. Monitor keeps a Litmap current by alerting the user to newly published papers that match it. Alerts are on every plan. The Free plan sends them monthly using the default algorithm, and Pro lets the user choose weekly or monthly alerts, the algorithm and filters. Pro also syncs both ways with Zotero. Papers can be imported from BibTeX, RIS and PubMed files and exported as BibTeX, RIS or CSV, and LibKey links open full text through a user's library access. Team workspaces add Admin and Member roles, with Editor or Viewer access to shared maps. Litmaps documents no public API or MCP server, and the app has no language setting, so it is used in English. Prices are in US dollars. The Free plan includes basic search with up to 20 input papers, 2 Litmaps, 100 articles per map and monthly alerts. Pro has separate Education and Commercial rates. Education is $10 per month billed annually or $12.50 billed monthly, and Commercial is $40 per month billed annually or $50 billed monthly. Pro adds advanced search, unlimited inputs, articles and Litmaps, and configurable alerts. Team adds team-wide collaboration and has no published price, and Enterprise is sold through the sales team. Litmaps offers country-based discounts in more than 100 countries. Litmaps suits graduate students, academic researchers and research groups who want to map a field from papers they already know and keep watching it for new work. Researchers who want AI-written summaries or data extracted across many papers should also look at Elicit. ResearchRabbit, which Litmaps acquired in 2025, is a separate citation-mapping product with its own plans. Current state Q3 2026: In May 2025 Litmaps acquired ResearchRabbit and completed the first close of a USD $1M funding round led by Scholarly Angels. Its subprocessor list names Microsoft Azure in the USA for hosting. Its privacy policy and data processing agreement cover GDPR and the New Zealand Privacy Act, and its privacy policy says aggregated, de-identified data is used to improve the service but does not address AI model training. Litmaps publishes no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification. G2 shows one review at 4.0 out of 5, and Trustpilot shows one review at 3.7.
