The facts

MarketMuse is an AI content strategy and SEO optimization platform operated by Siteimprove, which acquired it in November 2024. Siteimprove is now the contracting party, and the terms of service state that the services are made available by Siteimprove and were formerly provided by MarketMuse, Inc. The platform serves enterprise content marketing teams, SEO agencies and publishers building topical authority through systematic content investment. Core capabilities are topical authority modeling, AI content briefs, content scoring, content inventory analysis and content gap identification. It is built for content strategy planning rather than real-time page optimization. Integration depth is thin and thinly documented. WordPress is the one connector confirmed in the vendor's own knowledge base, through articles covering how to move content from the Optimize editor into a content management system. MarketMuse publishes no integrations directory, and its knowledge base returns no results for Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Semrush or Zapier when searched against a control term. There is no API documentation in the knowledge base either. No MCP server is published: mcp.marketmuse.com does not resolve, and /mcp, /llms.txt and the OAuth protected resource path all return genuine 404s, re-verified August 2026. Siteimprove does not publish pricing for MarketMuse. Four tiers are listed with limits attached but no rates. Free covers 1 user and 10 queries per month, with no site inventory, tracked topics, content briefs or strategy documents. Optimize adds 1 site inventory, 100 tracked topics, 5 content briefs per month and 1 strategy document per month. Research raises that to 3 users, 1,000 tracked topics, 10 briefs and 3 strategy documents. Strategy offers 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics, 20 briefs, all nine brief types and 5 strategy documents. Fees are payable in US dollars under the terms of service. Self-serve access is not available on any tier, including Free. Every plan card routes to a demo booking, and the product signup page states that sign up is disabled and directs prospective users to contact sales, so a buyer cannot evaluate even the free tier without a sales conversation. Connect, the internal linking feature, is restricted to the Strategy plan and above. The terms of service make the customer responsible for ensuring that data submitted to the AI features does not include personal data, and require human review of AI output before it is relied on. MarketMuse is not suited to individual content creators, freelancers or small teams. Clearscope at $129/mo and Surfer at $49/mo billed annually are better fits for teams that need individual page optimization with transparent, self-serve pricing. Frase at $39/mo billed annually covers brief creation, AI writing and content optimization at a lower price point. MarketMuse does not support local SEO, paid advertising analysis, social media optimization or link building. As of Q3 2026 the product operates under Siteimprove with no published pricing and no self-serve entry. Its AI features are powered by third-party providers, named in the terms of service as OpenAI and Amazon Bedrock, rather than by wholly proprietary models. Siteimprove holds an ISO 27001:2022 certificate issued by the British Assessment Bureau in March 2024, which names no product scope. MarketMuse publishes no security page of its own, and its privacy policy states that the company is GDPR compliant.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Strategy-first content positioning is genuinely differentiated. MarketMuse models entire topic areas and identifies gaps in topical authority, which serves enterprise teams building long-term authority better than tools focused only on individual page optimization.
  • Planning outputs are concrete rather than advisory. Content briefs, strategy documents and a scored content inventory give a team a prioritized list of what to write next instead of a set of metrics to interpret.
  • Strong fit for enterprise content teams running long-term programs. The value compounds over years of consistent topical authority building, which suits sustained content investment better than tactical optimization-only tools.

Limitations

  • No self-serve access on any tier, including the Free plan. The signup page states that sign up is disabled and every plan card routes to a demo booking, so even free evaluation requires a sales conversation.
  • No published pricing for any paid tier. Plan limits are listed publicly but rates are not, so budgeting requires a quote and the evaluation cycle is longer than for self-serve competitors.
  • Integration coverage is thin and largely undocumented. WordPress is the only connector confirmed in the vendor's knowledge base, there is no integrations directory and no API documentation, and Connect, the internal linking feature, is restricted to the Strategy plan and above.
