JetBrains Air is JetBrains' system of products for agentic software development, introduced on September 22, 2026. Air in JetBrains IDEs is a plugin, in early access since October 1, 2026 and also shipped in the 2026.3 EAP builds, that runs several coding agents in parallel across projects, with each agent's work organized as sessions that can be tracked, steered and reviewed in one place. Air Teams, in early access, runs shared projects and agent tasks in dedicated cloud environments, with automations for code review, release notes and fixes. Air Governance, formerly JetBrains Central, is the organization layer for choosing which agents, models and providers teams can use, setting spending limits and tracking cost, and it became generally available on October 22, 2026. JetBrains calls Air the future of agentic development in its IDEs, while JetBrains AI Assistant remains available and supported as a separate plugin.

Air is not an AI provider and ships with no agents installed. It supports OpenAI Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, Claude Agent and Junie out of the box, connects other agents through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) and its agent registry, and can run Claude Code on a Claude subscription in its terminal. Developers bring their own provider subscriptions, API keys or a base URL, or use JetBrains AI credits billed at public API rates, and can switch between them mid-session. The IDE's code intelligence and built-in skills give supported agents deterministic tools for debugging, profiling, database exploration and semantic code search, and changes from an agent session open as IDE diffs that can be reviewed and commented on line by line. Tasks can start locally and move to cloud agents that keep working after the laptop closes, Air Context gives agents a semantic index of the codebase, and Air Teams and Air Governance manage MCP servers centrally so every agent on a team uses the same approved external tools.

Pricing is in USD. Air is free to install, and JetBrains currently offers free runs of Junie Lite, its cost-efficient agent configuration, to anyone with a JetBrains account, subject to fair use. Other usage is paid with JetBrains AI credits at standard API rates with no markup, with the developer's own provider keys, or through a JetBrains AI plan, where AI Pro is $100 per year or $10 per month and AI Ultimate $300 per year or $30 per month for individuals. For organizations, Air Governance Basic is free for JetBrains business customers, with a shared credit pool, centralized billing, spending limits, SSO and AI analytics. Business is $20 per seat per month and adds model and agent controls, group-level policies, centralized MCP management, an Analytics API and managed provider keys, and Enterprise is custom-priced, with hybrid deployments, AI audit logs, workspaces and IdP and SCIM configuration.

What the free start does not buy: cloud runs currently require a JetBrains AI subscription, Air in IDEs and Air Teams are both in early access, mobile access is listed as coming soon, and JetBrains says cloud runs are rolling out to remaining customers gradually over the coming months. Model and agent controls, centralized MCP management and managed provider keys need Air Governance Business, and hybrid deployment, audit logs and IdP and SCIM configuration need Air Governance Enterprise.

JetBrains Air suits developers and teams who work in JetBrains IDEs, run several coding agents and want one place to steer, review and govern them. Developers who want AI completion and a chat-based assistant in the same IDEs should consider JetBrains AI Assistant, developers who want JetBrains' own cost-efficient agent across the terminal and CI should consider Junie, and developers who want an agent-first platform with its own desktop agent manager should consider Google Antigravity.

Current state Q4 2026: JetBrains opened the Air in IDEs early access program on October 1, 2026 and made Air Governance generally available on October 22, 2026, saying Air Governance already manages the agentic usage of roughly 2,300 people inside JetBrains. Air Teams remains in early access. Air Governance lists SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance, the Basic plan includes no training on customer data, and with a third-party subscription data goes directly to that provider rather than through JetBrains.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • ✓Runs several coding agents in parallel inside JetBrains IDEs, including Junie, Codex, Claude Agent, GitHub Copilot and any ACP-compatible agent, with no lock-in to one vendor.
  • ✓Agents get the IDE's code intelligence and built-in tools, and every change opens as an IDE diff that can be reviewed and commented on line by line.
  • ✓Air Governance Basic is free for JetBrains business customers and adds centralized billing, spending limits, SSO and AI analytics across agents and providers.

Limitations

  • –Air in IDEs and Air Teams are both in early access, mobile access is listed as coming soon, and cloud runs are still rolling out to remaining customers.
  • –Cloud runs currently require a JetBrains AI subscription, and usage beyond the free Junie Lite runs is paid in AI credits or through the developer's own provider keys.
  • –Model and agent controls, centralized MCP management and managed provider keys need Air Governance Business at $20 per seat per month, and audit logs and SCIM need Enterprise.

Model architectureNot a model provider: runs JetBrains and third-party coding agents (Junie, Codex, Claude Agent, Gemini, GitHub Copilot and ACP agents) on the user's own provider subscriptions or keys or on JetBrains AI credits. Junie Lite currently runs on Qwen 3.6 27B
Autonomous rateConfigurable. In Air in IDEs the developer tracks, steers and reviews each agent session, and cloud agents keep working on long tasks after the laptop closes. Air Teams automations start agent runs from triggers such as a merge or a new pull request. JetBrains does not publish an autonomous completion rate.
