Junie

Junie is the AI coding agent from JetBrains. It runs in the terminal as Junie CLI on Linux, macOS and Windows, inside JetBrains IDEs and Android Studio, and in CI through a GitHub Action and GitLab CI/CD. Before it writes code, Junie can produce a structured plan covering requirements, technical design and delivery stages, stored in .junie/plans where it can be edited and committed. In JetBrains IDEs it can drive the IDE's debugger, setting breakpoints and inspecting runtime state. Custom subagents, agent skills, project guidelines, custom slash commands and hooks tailor how it works, and remote mode lets a developer follow and steer a running CLI session from a web browser on another device. JetBrains took Junie out of Beta on June 17, 2026. Junie works with models from several providers. Through a JetBrains AI subscription it uses cloud models from providers including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and xAI, and developers can instead bring their own keys from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI or OpenRouter, reuse a GitHub Copilot subscription, or connect local and self-hosted models through Ollama, LM Studio or LiteLLM. Junie Local runs a tuned Qwen3.6-27B model entirely on the developer's own Mac. It connects to external tools as an MCP client, speaks the Agent Client Protocol so ACP-compatible editors can use it, and runs headless in build pipelines. The GitHub Action reviews pull requests, turns issues into pull requests and fixes CI failures, the GitLab integration works on GitLab.com and self-managed instances, and Jira and YouTrack issues can trigger Junie to open a GitHub pull request. Its /review command runs a read-only code review agent. Pricing is in USD. Junie is free to start with no card or subscription, includes 5 AI credits, and bills bring-your-own-key usage at the provider's own rates, and Junie Local is free with no credits. Paid use runs on JetBrains AI plans: for individuals, AI Pro is $8.33 per user per month billed annually or $10 billed monthly with 10 AI Credits per 30 days, and AI Ultimate is $25 per user per month billed annually or $30 billed monthly with 35 AI Credits, and JetBrains recommends AI Ultimate for regular Junie use. Usage-based billing is also available through a Junie API key. The free start includes 5 AI credits, and cloud use beyond them needs a JetBrains AI plan, a Junie API key or the developer's own provider keys. Junie Local requires an Apple Silicon M5 Mac running macOS 26 or later with 64 GB of RAM. Remote mode needs a JetBrains Account or Junie API key sign-in and is not available through JetBrains AI Enterprise or with bring-your-own-key alone. By default Junie asks for approval before sensitive actions such as terminal commands, MCP tools and edits outside the project, unless they are on its action allowlist or brave mode is turned on. Junie suits developers who want a coding agent that works across the terminal, JetBrains IDEs and CI, with a free choice of model. Developers who want AI completion, chat and several agents inside JetBrains IDEs should consider JetBrains AI Assistant, where Junie is one of the agents, developers who want an agent on a Claude subscription should consider Claude Code, and developers who want an MIT-licensed open-source agent should consider OpenCode. Current state Q3 2026: Junie left Beta on June 17, 2026. Junie Local launched in August 2026 on Apple Silicon M5 Macs, and JetBrains says more models and hardware will follow. In September 2026 JetBrains introduced JetBrains Air, a system of products for agent-driven development, and said Junie will be supported across all Air surfaces. Junie CLI releases added Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and Grok 4.7 on September 22, 2026. JetBrains publishes a SOC 2 Type II report for Junie, and the JetBrains AI terms state that customer inputs, data and outputs are not used to train models unless the customer expressly agrees.
