Pros & Limitations
Editorial assessmentClaude for Excel
Pros
- ✓Cell-level citations that jump to the referenced cell, so every explanation traces back to a specific cell, formula or tab. That is audit-ready transparency, and it is the feature Anthropic leads with.
- ✓Connectors pull external context straight into the workbook, and Anthropic names S&P Global, LSEG and Daloopa. Skills apply reusable task recipes automatically, and both are configured once across all four Office agents.
- ✓Generally available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise with no separate add-in fee, and enterprise deployment can route inference through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Azure AI Foundry.
Limitations
- ⚠Activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs or the Compliance API, and the add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings. An OpenTelemetry feed to your own tooling mitigates this but does not close it, and it is Enterprise-only.
- ⚠Routing through a third-party platform such as Bedrock, Vertex AI, Foundry or an LLM gateway may cost you connectors and Skills entirely. The enterprise routing option and the extension layer are in tension.
- ⚠Data tables and macro or VBA operations are unsupported, and the add-in does not run on Excel 2016 or 2019 perpetual or volume licenses or on Excel for iPad. Anthropic also warns explicitly about prompt injection from untrusted workbooks.
Microsoft Copilot Cowork
Pros
- ✓Runs inside the customer's M365 tenant under existing Microsoft Enterprise Data Protection: inherits the same compliance posture as M365 E5, IT teams already know how to manage it, and no separate procurement or governance review is needed for organizations already on M365.
- ✓Work IQ context layer pulls from emails, files, meetings, Teams, and SharePoint automatically: meaningfully better cross-app reasoning than agents that require explicit data source connection per task, with no manual coordination required.
- ✓Built on Claude Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5 with the same agentic harness as Claude Cowork, plus GPT 5.5 in Frontier and Microsoft's Cowork 1 model coming: delivers Anthropic reasoning quality with Microsoft enterprise observability, governance, and the Critique dual-model review feature for complex research.
Limitations
- ⚠Cannot interact with local files or applications: Copilot Cowork runs cloud-only inside the M365 tenant, so unlike Claude Cowork's desktop flexibility it cannot touch local machines, though MCP connectors now extend it to select third-party tools like Adobe, Figma, and Monday.com.
- ⚠EU, EFTA, UK, and government cloud tenants face deployment constraints: the Anthropic sub-processor is disabled by default with no in-region Claude processing committed, and government cloud is blocked entirely, so organizations with strict data residency requirements must wait for regional availability.
- ⚠Requires an existing M365 Copilot license as a prerequisite: with the underlying Copilot license at about $30 per user per month, the effective cost is roughly $60 per user per month, limiting adoption to well-funded Microsoft-first enterprises.
