Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Claude for Excel

Pros

  • Cell-level citations with clickable navigation: every explanation traces back to specific cells, formulas, and tabs, providing audit-ready transparency that competitors using AI inside Excel routinely lack
  • Native shared context across Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook via the Claude for Microsoft 365 suite: analysts can build a comps table in Excel and carry that data into a pitch deck without re-explaining the dataset
  • Enterprise gateway flexibility through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry: regulated industries can route inference through existing cloud providers without forcing a new vendor relationship through Anthropic's direct API

Limitations

  • Not yet captured in Enterprise audit logs or Compliance API and does not inherit custom data retention settings: a material gap for procurement teams in regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, legal) that require full action traceability before deploying AI in spreadsheets
  • VBA macros, pivot table refreshes from external connections, and some Power Query operations are outside the current scope, requiring manual work for workflows that depend on those Excel features
  • Prompt injection risk in untrusted spreadsheets: Anthropic explicitly warns against using Claude for Excel with downloaded templates, vendor files, or external data imports, since malicious instructions can be hidden in cells, formulas, or comments

Microsoft Copilot Cowork

Pros

  • Runs inside the customer's M365 tenant under existing Microsoft Enterprise Data Protection: inherits the same compliance posture as M365 E5, IT teams already know how to manage it, and no separate procurement or governance review is needed for organizations already on M365
  • Work IQ context layer pulls from emails, files, meetings, Teams, and SharePoint automatically: meaningfully better cross-app reasoning than agents that require explicit data source connection per task, with no manual coordination required
  • Built on Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 with the same agentic harness as Claude Cowork: delivers Anthropic reasoning quality with Microsoft enterprise observability, governance, and the Critique dual-model review feature for complex research tasks

Limitations

  • Cannot interact with local files, applications, or third-party tools outside M365: end-to-end workflows touching non-Microsoft systems require additional connectors or fall back to manual handoff, a real constraint versus Claude Cowork's desktop-and-cloud flexibility
  • EU, EFTA, UK, and government cloud tenants face deployment blockers: Anthropic sub-processor disabled by default, no in-region Claude processing committed, government cloud blocked entirely; organizations with strict data residency requirements need to wait for regional availability
  • Still in Frontier preview with no committed GA date and requires an existing M365 Copilot license as a prerequisite: the effective cost is approximately $60 per user per month when the underlying Copilot license is included, limiting adoption to well-funded Microsoft-first enterprises
