Microsoft Copilot Cowork

Microsoft Copilot Cowork is the agentic centerpiece of Microsoft 365 Copilot, built in close collaboration with Anthropic. It uses the same agentic harness as Claude Cowork but runs cloud-based inside the customer's Microsoft 365 tenant rather than on local machines. Users describe an outcome, and Cowork plans, reasons across tools and files, executes work across Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and SharePoint, and surfaces checkpoints for approval before applying changes. It runs on Anthropic Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5, with GPT 5.5 available in the Frontier program and Microsoft's own Cowork 1 model coming soon for lower-cost everyday tasks, all under admin-selectable model routing. Work IQ, Microsoft's context layer that draws on emails, files, meetings, Teams, and SharePoint, gives the agent the full graph of a user's enterprise work without manual coordination. The Critique feature pairs models so one plans and another reviews, and Microsoft reports plus 13.8 percent on the DRACO deep-research benchmark with this approach. Copilot Cowork works across Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and SharePoint, and it connects to select third-party tools such as Adobe, Figma, and Monday.com through the Model Context Protocol. It cannot touch local files or applications, EU, EFTA, and UK tenants have the Anthropic sub-processor disabled by default for data sovereignty, and government cloud tenants are blocked entirely. Pricing is $30 per user per month (USD) on top of an existing Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft also offers the M365 E7 Frontier Suite, generally available since May 1, 2026 at $99 per user per month, which bundles Copilot Cowork with Agent 365, Microsoft Entra Suite, and M365 E5. Because Cowork requires the underlying Copilot license (about $30 per user per month), the effective cost is roughly $60 per user per month before volume licensing. Security inherits the full Microsoft 365 posture: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA, and Entra identity and access management, with no separate compliance review for organizations already on M365 E5. Microsoft states customer data is not used to train foundation models. Microsoft Copilot Cowork is not the right fit for organizations outside the Microsoft 365 ecosystem: it requires an existing M365 Copilot license and runs exclusively inside the Microsoft tenant. EU, EFTA, and UK organizations with strict data residency needs face deployment constraints until in-region Claude processing is committed, and government cloud customers are blocked entirely. Teams needing to automate workflows across local machines or the full range of non-Microsoft systems will find scope narrower than a desktop agent like Claude Cowork, even with the MCP connectors. Current state Q3 2026: Copilot Cowork became generally available on June 16, 2026, moving out of the Frontier early-access program. It runs on Anthropic Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5, with GPT 5.5 in Frontier and the Microsoft Cowork 1 model announced as coming soon.
