Microsoft's cloud-based agentic AI for Microsoft 365 -- powered by Anthropic's Claude. Plans and executes multi-step tasks across Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word with Work IQ context. Currently in Frontier early access; $30/user/month on top of existing M365 Copilot license.

Microsoft Copilot Cowork is the centerpiece of Wave 3 of Microsoft 365 Copilot, announced March 9 2026 and available in the Frontier early-access program from March 30 2026. Built in close collaboration with Anthropic, it uses the same agentic harness as Claude Cowork but runs cloud-based inside the customer's Microsoft 365 tenant rather than on local machines. Users describe an outcome and Cowork plans, reasons across tools and files, executes work across Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and SharePoint, and surfaces checkpoints for approval before applying changes. Powered primarily by Claude Sonnet 4.6 (everyday tasks) and Claude Opus 4.6 (complex reasoning), with admin-selectable model routing. Work IQ -- Microsoft's context layer that draws on emails, files, meetings, Teams, and SharePoint -- gives the agent the full graph of a user's enterprise work without manual coordination. Pricing is $30/user/month on top of an existing Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft also announced the M365 E7 Frontier Suite (general availability May 1 2026 at $99/user/month) which bundles Copilot Cowork with Agent 365, Microsoft Entra Suite, and M365 E5. The Frontier program is opt-in (not invite-only) and requires the Anthropic sub-processor toggle to be enabled in tenant settings. Important regional caveats: EU, EFTA, and UK tenants have the Anthropic sub-processor disabled by default for data sovereignty reasons; government cloud tenants are blocked entirely; in-country Claude processing for Australia and other regions is not yet committed. Reference customer Capital Group reports value in planning, scheduling, and creating deliverables. The Critique feature pairs models -- one plans, another reviews -- and Microsoft reports +13.8% on the DRACO benchmark for deep research. Best fit: enterprises already on M365 with Copilot licenses that want autonomous cross-app execution under existing Microsoft governance, identity, and compliance controls. Not appropriate for organizations outside M365, smaller teams without a Copilot license, EU/UK organizations with strict data residency requirements until in-region Claude processing arrives, or government cloud customers. Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Runs inside the customer's M365 tenant under existing Microsoft Enterprise Data Protection -- inherits the same compliance posture as M365 E5, IT teams already know how to manage it, no separate procurement or governance review needed
  • Work IQ context layer pulls from emails, files, meetings, Teams, and SharePoint automatically -- meaningfully better cross-app reasoning than agents that need explicit data source connection per task
  • Built on Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 (best-in-class agentic models) with the same engine as Claude Cowork -- delivers Anthropic's reasoning quality with Microsoft's enterprise observability and governance

Limitations

  • Cannot interact with local files, applications, or third-party tools outside M365 -- end-to-end workflows that touch non-Microsoft systems require additional connectors or fall back to manual handoff, a real constraint versus Claude Cowork's desktop-and-cloud flexibility
  • EU, EFTA, UK, and government cloud tenants face deployment blockers -- Anthropic sub-processor disabled by default, no in-region Claude processing committed, government cloud blocked entirely; organizations with strict data residency need to wait
  • Still in Frontier preview with no committed GA date (analyst estimates Q2 2026) and limited public documentation -- early adopters absorb the rough edges typical of v1 enterprise software, including permission oversharing risks if SharePoint policies are loose
