Microsoft Copilot Cowork is the centerpiece of Wave 3 of Microsoft 365 Copilot, announced March 9, 2026 and available in the Frontier early-access program from March 30, 2026. Built in close collaboration with Anthropic, it uses the same agentic harness as Claude Cowork but runs cloud-based inside the customer's Microsoft 365 tenant rather than on local machines. Users describe an outcome and Cowork plans, reasons across tools and files, executes work across Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and SharePoint, and surfaces checkpoints for approval before applying changes. Powered primarily by Claude Sonnet 4.6 (everyday tasks) and Claude Opus 4.6 (complex reasoning), with admin-selectable model routing. Work IQ, Microsoft's context layer that draws on emails, files, meetings, Teams, and SharePoint, gives the agent the full graph of a user's enterprise work without manual coordination. The Critique feature pairs models: one plans, another reviews. Microsoft reports plus 13.8% on the DRACO benchmark for deep research with this approach. Confirmed integrations: Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, and the full Work IQ context graph. Named gaps: cannot interact with local files, applications, or third-party tools outside M365; EU, EFTA, and UK tenants have the Anthropic sub-processor disabled by default for data sovereignty reasons; government cloud tenants are blocked entirely; and in-country Claude processing for Australia and other regions is not yet committed. Pricing as announced March 2026: $30 per user per month on top of an existing Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft also announced the M365 E7 Frontier Suite at general availability May 1, 2026 at $99 per user per month, which bundles Copilot Cowork with Agent 365, Microsoft Entra Suite, and M365 E5. The Frontier program is opt-in (not invite-only) and requires the Anthropic sub-processor toggle to be enabled in tenant settings. Security inherits the full Microsoft 365 compliance posture: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA, and Entra identity and access management, with no separate compliance review required for organizations already on M365 E5. Microsoft Copilot Cowork is not the right fit for organizations outside the Microsoft 365 ecosystem: the product requires an existing M365 Copilot license and runs exclusively inside the Microsoft tenant. EU, EFTA, and UK organizations with strict data residency requirements face deployment blockers until in-region Claude processing is committed; government cloud customers are blocked entirely. Teams that need to automate workflows touching non-Microsoft third-party tools will find the scope limited to M365 apps without additional connectors. Smaller teams or organizations without M365 Copilot licenses face a significant total cost: the $30 per user per month add-on requires the underlying Copilot license (approximately $30 per user per month), making the effective cost approximately $60 per user per month before the Cowork add-on. Current state Q2 2026: Copilot Cowork remains in the Frontier early-access program as of this audit; no generally available date has been publicly committed. The M365 E7 Frontier Suite went GA on May 1, 2026 at $99 per user per month. Reference customer Capital Group reports value in planning, scheduling, and creating deliverables. The product is confirmed on the Microsoft 365 Copilot homepage at microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365-copilot. G2 presence for Microsoft 365 Copilot stands at 18 reviews at 4.5 stars on the microsoft-microsoft-365-copilot slug.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Runs inside the customer's M365 tenant under existing Microsoft Enterprise Data Protection: inherits the same compliance posture as M365 E5, IT teams already know how to manage it, and no separate procurement or governance review is needed for organizations already on M365
  • Work IQ context layer pulls from emails, files, meetings, Teams, and SharePoint automatically: meaningfully better cross-app reasoning than agents that require explicit data source connection per task, with no manual coordination required
  • Built on Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 with the same agentic harness as Claude Cowork: delivers Anthropic reasoning quality with Microsoft enterprise observability, governance, and the Critique dual-model review feature for complex research tasks

Limitations

  • Cannot interact with local files, applications, or third-party tools outside M365: end-to-end workflows touching non-Microsoft systems require additional connectors or fall back to manual handoff, a real constraint versus Claude Cowork's desktop-and-cloud flexibility
  • EU, EFTA, UK, and government cloud tenants face deployment blockers: Anthropic sub-processor disabled by default, no in-region Claude processing committed, government cloud blocked entirely; organizations with strict data residency requirements need to wait for regional availability
  • Still in Frontier preview with no committed GA date and requires an existing M365 Copilot license as a prerequisite: the effective cost is approximately $60 per user per month when the underlying Copilot license is included, limiting adoption to well-funded Microsoft-first enterprises
