Open-source community-maintained AI coding agent with local-first BYOK deployment. Refact Cloud retired April 2026. VS Code, JetBrains, MCP. Free and open source.

Refact.ai is the open-source autonomous AI coding agent now transitioning to a community-maintained, local-first project after the retirement of Refact Cloud in April 2026. Originally built by Small Magellanic Cloud Ai Ltd., Refact announced the shutdown of all hosted cloud services including accounts, managed inference, credits, subscriptions, and team features. The project continues as open-source software that runs locally from the IDE with user-configured providers or local model runtimes. The original GitHub repository (smallcloudai/refact, 3,500+ stars) was archived on May 30, 2026, with active development moved to a community fork. The local-first architecture means Refact runs entirely from the developer's machine. The product includes an autonomous AI agent that plans, executes, and iterates on coding tasks end to end with reasoning steps and repository search. Agent integrations include shell access, browser automation, GitHub and GitLab connections, database access, Docker, MCP support, and command-line tools. Refact sends requests only to the providers, local runtimes, and integrations the developer configures. BYOK provider support is exceptionally broad: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Groq, xAI, and any custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Local model runtimes include Ollama, LM Studio, and vLLM. Free unlimited code completions are powered by Qwen2.5-Coder. The platform includes a code-aware vector database (RAG) for repository understanding and in-IDE chat with up to 64k context. IDE support covers VS Code and JetBrains (PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, IntelliJ, CLion) as stable plugins, with Visual Studio, Neovim, and Sublime Text in beta. MCP is supported for connecting external tools. The integrations surface is strong for a local-first tool but lacks project management connections like Jira or Linear and collaboration platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Refact is not the right fit for teams that need a commercially supported, hosted AI coding service. There is no paid support, no SLA, no managed infrastructure, and no commercial entity maintaining the product going forward. Teams needing stability and vendor backing should evaluate Cursor at $20/month or Claude Code at $20/month instead. Refact is best suited for developers comfortable with self-hosted tooling who want full control over their AI stack with zero vendor lock-in. Current state Q2 2026: Refact Cloud was retired per an April 30, 2026 announcement. Active subscriptions were terminated with 30-day refund window. The original GitHub repository was archived May 30, 2026. Development continues in a community fork. The SOC 2 Type II certification listed previously applied to the commercial cloud service and may not be maintained going forward. All future support, roadmap discussion, and contributions operate through GitHub issues and pull requests.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Exceptionally broad BYOK provider support with zero commission: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Groq, xAI, plus local runtimes Ollama, LM Studio, and vLLM, with no markup on any provider billing.
  • Fully local-first architecture with no vendor dependency: Refact runs entirely from the IDE with user-configured providers, all data stays on the developer's machine, and the open-source codebase is auditable and forkable.
  • Rich agent integration surface for a local tool: shell, browser automation, GitHub/GitLab, databases, Docker, MCP, and CLI integrations give the autonomous agent meaningful access to the developer's full workflow.

Limitations

  • No commercial backing or paid support after cloud retirement: the project is community-maintained with no SLA, no dedicated support team, and no commercial entity guaranteeing ongoing development or security updates.
  • Original GitHub repository archived May 30, 2026: development moved to a community fork, creating fragmentation in documentation, issues, and community resources that increases adoption risk for new users.
  • Local-first deployment requires meaningful setup investment: developers must install the local engine, configure BYOK providers or local runtimes, and manage their own infrastructure, unlike hosted alternatives that work immediately after signup.
