Cursor Background Agent is Anysphere's headless coding agent that runs autonomously in the cloud without requiring the Cursor IDE to be open. Unlike the standard Cursor editor which requires active developer input, Background Agent works independently , executing multi-step coding tasks, running tests, making commits, and fixing failures while the developer focuses on other work. It is built on the same Cursor infrastructure with access to the full codebase context and can be triggered manually or via automated workflows. Background Agent is available to Cursor Pro and Business subscribers at no additional cost , it runs within the existing premium request allowance. Best suited for repetitive engineering tasks, test writing, bug fixes from CI failures, and dependency updates that are well-defined but time-consuming. Not yet suitable for novel architectural decisions or complex features that require deep product context and iterative human judgment.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • Runs autonomously in the cloud without the IDE open -- executes coding tasks, runs tests, and makes commits while the developer works on other things
  • Included in existing Cursor Pro and Business subscriptions at no additional cost -- no separate pricing for autonomous agent capability
  • Full codebase context from Cursor's existing indexing -- produces more accurate autonomous changes than agents without repository-level understanding

Limitations

  • Best suited for well-defined, repetitive tasks -- bug fixes, test writing, dependency updates -- not yet reliable for novel features requiring product judgment
  • Runs within existing premium request allowance -- heavy Background Agent usage accelerates consumption of monthly request quota on lower plans
  • Headless operation means less visibility into intermediate steps -- debugging failed autonomous runs requires reviewing logs rather than observing the agent interactively
