The facts

Zoo Code is a free, open-source AI coding agent for VS Code, with a JetBrains plugin in beta. It is the community fork that continued Roo Code after Roo Code Inc. shut that extension down on May 15, 2026, and Roo Code's own shutdown notice names it as one of two successors. Zoo Code keeps Roo Code's features, settings structure and Apache-2.0 license, and the vendor states that Roo Code settings can be exported and imported with custom modes, shortcuts and model configurations carried over.

The agent works through built-in modes, including Architect for planning without edits, Code for implementation and Debug for diagnosis, plus custom modes a team defines. Every change lands as a diff for review, and actions can be approved one by one or auto-approved by category. Checkpoints, codebase indexing and semantic search support work in large repositories, and the agent connects out to external tools through the Model Context Protocol as a client.

The extension is free with your own API keys, and Zoo Code's documentation covers 28 provider integrations including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Bedrock, Vertex, DeepSeek, Mistral, xAI and OpenRouter, alongside local models through Ollama and LM Studio. Two paid services are optional. Zoo Gateway sells prepaid credits for a hosted model catalog through one account, and Cloud Agents run sandboxed coding workflows in the cloud from the same credit balance. Credits start at a $5 minimum purchase and are non-refundable. Team costs $25 per seat per month with a two-seat minimum and adds a shared wallet, per-member budgets and spending analytics. Enterprise is custom, with SSO and SCIM, audit logs, data residency controls, provider allowlists, a self-hosted gateway and a 99.9% SLA. Prices are in USD.

The project is young and community-run. Its repository was created on April 23, 2026, it reached the VS Code Marketplace on May 8, 2026, and it currently ships releases weekly, most recently v3.92.0 on October 24, 2026. Its terms are governed by the laws of Alberta, Canada, and they do not name a company behind the paid services. Teams that want the upstream project Roo Code itself came from should look at Cline, and teams that want a maintained Roo Code descendant with a named corporate owner and more surfaces should look at Kilo Code. OpenCode is a further open-source, bring-your-own-key option that runs in the terminal.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • ✓Picks up where Roo Code stopped, with the same modes, settings structure and Apache-2.0 license, and a documented export and import path for existing Roo Code settings.
  • ✓Model-agnostic with your own keys, across 28 documented provider integrations plus local models through Ollama and LM Studio, so the extension itself costs nothing.
  • ✓Actively maintained, with weekly releases through October 2026 and a JetBrains plugin in beta alongside the VS Code extension.

Limitations

  • –Community-run and young: the repository dates from April 2026, its terms name no company behind the paid services, and support is community-based outside Enterprise.
  • –The independent review base is small, with 25 ratings on the VS Code Marketplace and no G2 profile, so there is little outside evidence yet on long-term reliability.
  • –Zoo Gateway and Cloud Agents credits are prepaid and non-refundable, so teams should size purchases to expected usage.
