AI-native terminal with agentic coding, cloud agents, and codebase indexing. Now open-source. Free; Build $18/mo; Max $180/mo; Business $45/user/mo; Enterprise custom.

Warp is the AI-native terminal that reimagines the command-line experience around modern UX patterns and integrated AI capabilities: agentic coding, cloud agents, codebase indexing, and conversational AI directly in the terminal. Founded in 2020 with venture investment from Sequoia, GV, and BoxGroup, Warp has grown into a leading brand in the modern terminal category with millions of users particularly among Mac developers. The product became open-source in 2025 with 62,000+ GitHub stars under warpdotdev/Warp. Pricing is tiered across five plans. Free at $0/month covers a modern terminal with limited AI credits and model access, limited cloud agents, limited codebase indexing, individually configured Zero Data Retention, and limited cloud conversation storage. Build at $18/month annual ($20/month monthly) is the recommended tier with 1,500 monthly AI credits, access to frontier OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models, extended cloud agent access, BYOK, and unlimited Warp Drive collaboration. Max at $180/month annual ($200/month monthly) adds 18,000 monthly credits (12x Build) for power users running heavy autonomous workflows. Business at $45/user/month annual ($50/month monthly) adds enforced team-wide Zero Data Retention, SAML SSO, admin dashboard, and up to 50 seats. Enterprise is custom-priced with custom compute environments, BYOLLM, self-hosted cloud agents, and dedicated support. Annual billing provides 10% savings. Warp differentiates from iTerm2, macOS Terminal, Hyper, and Tabby through AI-native architecture: rather than retrofitting AI features onto a traditional terminal, Warp was redesigned around block-based command output, integrated AI assistance, and team collaboration. Cloud Agents support always-on autonomous task execution that survives terminal session closure, important for long-running agentic workflows. MCP support is available across all paid tiers. Codebase indexing supports up to 100,000 files per codebase on paid plans. Warp integrates with major shell environments (zsh, bash, fish), version control (Git, GitHub, GitLab), and AI providers including Claude, OpenAI GPT, and Gemini. The platform operates under SOC 2 Type II compliance. Windows support, while available, lags macOS and Linux in polish. In June 2026 Warp launched Oz, an orchestration layer that coordinates Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Warp Agent in a unified workflow for multi-agent development.

Pros & Limitations

Editorial assessment

Pros

  • AI-native terminal architecture is genuinely differentiated: Warp was redesigned from inception around AI assistance, block-based output, and team collaboration, producing a materially better terminal experience than traditional alternatives that retrofit AI features.
  • Cloud Agents support always-on autonomous execution: long-running agentic tasks survive terminal session closure, valuable for autonomous engineering workflows that traditional terminal tools cannot support without keeping a session alive.
  • Open-source with 62,000+ GitHub stars: the 2025 transition to open-source addresses data governance concerns that blocked adoption at security-conscious organizations, with the community able to audit, fork, and self-host.

Limitations

  • macOS-first focus with weaker Windows experience: Warp is mature on macOS and Linux but Windows support lags the other platforms in stability and feature parity, constraining cross-platform team adoption.
  • Business tier pricing scales steeply: $45/user/month annual means a 50-person engineering team pays $27,000/year for terminal access, significant overhead versus free traditional terminals plus separate AI tools.
  • Zero Data Retention requires individual configuration on lower tiers: Free, Build, and Max users must configure ZDR themselves rather than having it enforced by default, creating compliance risk if not set up correctly.
