The facts

Freebuff is a free AI coding agent from Freebuff, Inc., the Y Combinator company that also runs Codebuff. It launched on February 12, 2026, and its code is open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Give it a task in plain English and it finds the relevant files, makes the changes and runs the checks the project uses. It runs in the terminal (npm install -g freebuff), as a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that runs several agents side by side, in the browser through Freebuff Web, which builds and deploys full-stack apps from a prompt, and through Freebuff Cloud, which runs agents on a connected GitHub repository. An Android app lets developers check and reply to that work from a phone, and threads carry across all of these surfaces.

Freebuff names one-click connections to GitHub, Linear, Notion, Stripe, Vercel, Supabase, Sentry, PostHog and Resend, and its open-source code includes an MCP client, so the agent can call tools from MCP servers a developer adds. Freebuff Cloud works directly on a connected GitHub repository. Freebuff does not publish an MCP server or a public API of its own.

Pricing is in USD. The Free plan costs $0 and includes 30 hours of agent use a day, refilled daily, paid for by text ads shown inside the product. Starter is $8/mo, or $6.25 a month billed yearly at $75. Plus is $25 a month, or $19.58 a month billed yearly at $235. Pro is $60 a month, or $46.67 a month billed yearly at $560. Yearly billing saves 22% on each paid plan, and paid plans renew monthly or annually.

The Free plan runs DeepSeek V4.1 Flash models. GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6.1 Terra, Claude Haiku 5.5, Muse Spark 1.3 and the faster DeepSeek V4.1 Flash model need a paid plan, which also adds daily hours. The terms allow one free account per person. Freebucks credits have no cash value, and purchased Freebucks expire after one year.

Freebuff is best for developers, students and indie builders who want a capable coding agent without a subscription or their own API keys. Developers who want to bring their own model keys and keep prompts with their own model provider should consider OpenCode or Aider. Teams that want the agent inside VS Code or JetBrains should consider Kilo Code.

Current state Q4 2026: Freebuff describes the service as a beta, and its terms, updated October 13, 2026 and effective November 12, 2026, say plan limits, prices and included models can change during the beta. The repository has 14k GitHub stars. iOS is listed as coming soon. The privacy policy, updated October 18, 2026, says activity and prompt data are used to choose and measure ads and to train the models that do so, and that prompts sent through a model labeled for AI training may be shared, licensed or sold. Connecting a GitHub repository to Freebuff Cloud allows a Codebase Evaluation of its technical or commercial value. No security certification is published.
